I am so not a good cook. On most nights, my husband is the one who makes dinner. I'm just not very good at looking at what we have in the house and then whipping something up. I need a recipe to follow. Depending on the semester, my husband sometimes teaches late, and so on those nights, I'm in charge of dinner. If I'm not ordering out, then I usually look for a recipe that doesn't look too hard and then I go out and buy the ingredients I need.

Recently, I was given the chance to try Sun Basket, a meal delivery subscription service. My cousin and sister had been trying to get me to try a similar service, but I was hesitant because of the costs and the fact that I have a large family and picky eaters.

Sun Basket offers flexible meal plans that are delivered weekly. They feature healthy, 30-minute recipes that were developed by award-winning California chef, Justine Kelly. The recipes use organic, non-GMO produce, responsibly raised, hormone-free meats and sustainably sourced seafood. Ingredients are pre-measured for less food waste and easy clean up. All packaging is 100% recyclable or compostable,

Subscribers can choose from meals from either the Classic Menu, which features healthy spins on restaurant-worthy dishes, with a mix of global flavors and comforting classics; or the Family Menu, which features kid-friendly recipes that the whole family will enjoy.

The Classic Menu includes 3 recipes per week, with 2 or 4 servings per recipe. They're priced at $11.49 per serving and are available in 5 different meal plans:
  • Chef's Choice - Fresh, seasonal recipes featuring top-quality meats, seafood, organic produce and flavorful housemade sauces.
  • Vegetarian - Meatless recipes emphasizing seasonal organic produce, nutritious plant-based proteins and housemade vegetarian sauces.
  • Paleo - Recipes free of grains, soy, corn, dairy, and gluten, with plenty of lean meats and seafood, organic produce and housemade sauces.
  • Gluten-Free - Completely gluten-free recipes featuring top-quality meats and seafood, organic produce, gluten-free grains and pasta, and housemade sauces.
  • Rise & Shine - Get 2 quick breakfasts to start your mornings off right, plus 2 of the chef's favorite dinner recipes.
The Family Menu includes 2 or 4 recipes per week, with 4 servings per recipe. The price is $9.99 per serving. It's available in 3 different meal plans: Chef's Choice, Vegetarian and Gluten-Free.

Because we're a family of 6, I chose to try the Family Menu. I was able to sample two recipes: Sesame-Crusted Chicken with Roasted New Potato Salad and Vietnamese Steak Stir-Fry with Jasmine Rice.

When the package came, my daughter and I were super excited to see what was inside!

I was really impressed with how well the food was packed inside the box. And the box was nice and pretty!

Under the insulation, were two bags containing the ingredients for the two different meals.

The meat was underneath the meal bags. I liked the giant ice packs that they came with. They're recyclable, but I just kept them. I thought they could be good for traveling with a cooler.

We tried the Vietnamese Steak Stir-Fry With Jasmine Rice first. My kids like steak and they like rice, so I thought this would be a good choice to start out with. My husband was outside doing yard work, while I did the prep work for this meal. I found it to be pretty easy, even for someone like me, with limited kitchen experience. I liked that they give you just enough of each ingredient and that the carrots were already shredded.

The meal kit came with a cup of organic jasmine rice. I didn't think that would be enough for us, so I ended up adding another cup of jasmine rice from what I had at home and cooked them in our rice cooker, instead of cooking the rice over the stove, as the directions stated.

When it came time to start cooking everything, my husband came in to help out. The meal cooked up fairly quickly and the kitchen smelled really good as it was cooking.

Since my kids are super picky, they only ate the rice and meat. But, my husband and I thought it was really good and even had seconds. I think, though, if my kids each ate a normal sized serving, this meal kit may not have been enough to feed all six of us.

I was working late the next night, when my husband made the Sesame-Crusted Chicken with Roasted New Potato Salad. So, I didn't get nearly as many pictures.

As with the other meal kit, it was nice that everything was pre-measured, so we knew that we would have enough to make the recipe. The prep work wasn't too hard. Though, my husband felt the meal kit included too much salad.

When I got back from work, I did get a chance to try it. The chicken was pretty good. I felt the salad could've used a little more flavor. Overall, this meal wasn't bad, but we definitely preferred the Vietnamese Steak Stir-Fry.

I liked the convenience of having everything you need delivered right to your door. The food was really fresh and I like that it's organic and high quality food. I also like that you can pick which meals you want to get and that they all seemed relatively easy to prepare. But, with our large family, I'm not sure one meal kit would be enough to feed all six of us. I can see us still needing to make other food, especially for my pickier kids.

It would be good, though, to use the service every once in awhile. It's nice to have a change in the kinds of food and cuisine we eat. I like how Sun Basket is flexible in that you're allowed to skip a week and cancel at any time.
