Crochet: Very Hungry Caterpillar Cocoon and Hat

Saturday, March 11, 2017

As winter dies down, I had been looking for other new things to crochet. The other day, I was scrolling through my Pinterest feed and came across a Very Hungry Caterpillar hat and cocoon set. I thought it was so cute! I'm done having babies, but one of my co-workers is expecting a baby this June. I thought it would be the perfect gift! So, I pinned several different patterns and set out to the craft store to find some yarn.

Ideally, I wanted a yarn that had a lot of different colors. As you can see on the book cover above, the caterpillar's body has varying shades of blue and green. I had one yarn in mind that I had worked with before. My one son had gifted me two skeins of Loops & Threads Facets yarn in Capri Blue. It had shades of blue and green and yellow. But, sadly, it's only seasonal and wasn't available.

Though, when I went out to buy yarn, I wasn't even thinking that it wouldn't be available at Michael's. I just knew Michael's wasn't having a sale that week and A.C. Moore was. So, that's where I went. I probably spent 15 minutes in the yarn section, looking for a yarn that would have the same colors. After almost giving up, I spotted a skein of Premier Yarns Puzzle in Cryptic. It's a self-striping yarn with blues and greens. Plus, it's a bulky weight yarn, so I thought it would work up quickly.

My favorite products from MommyCon DC 2015

Sunday, September 20, 2015

DISCLOSURE: As a member of the MommyCon Blogger Program, I received free admission to MommyCon in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.

This post is a little late, but I wanted to write about some of the fun products featured in the General Admission and Media Swag Bags, as well as some companies that I saw at the Exhibit Hall at MommyCon DC.

My husband, my two-year-old daughter and I attended MommyCon in DC last month. You can read a recap of the day's events here.  It was a fun day and we got to find out about some cool products.

As part of our admission, my husband and I each received a Gift Bag full of samples and information about some fun products for parents and babies.

Here is what was included in the General Admission Gift Bag:

Here is what was included in the Media Gift Bag:

They both came in a reusable bag with the words "Do Small Things With Great Love" on it. A lot of the products in the gift bags I passed on to my sister.  She just had a baby girl yesterday! Other products I'm passing on to my cousin and his wife. They're expecting a boy in November.

One of my favorite products in the Gift Bags was the No-Spill Cup from Re-Play. They're made from recycled milk jugs and come in six fun colors! They have a one-piece valve, so they're leak-free and easy to clean. They're perfect for my two-year-old to drink her water and soy milk (she's allergic to dairy) from!

Another great product in the Gift Bags was the LATCH bottle from Munchkin. It's supposed to provide easy transition from breast to bottle. This would have been great to have when my kids were little. Three out of four of them would not take a bottle. My one son ended up losing a lot of weight because I went back to work so quickly after having him, but he wouldn't take anything but the breast. Luckily, with my other two, I was able to schedule nursing breaks at work and my husband would drive the babies to me. The LATCH bottle has an anti-colic valve to prevent air bubbles and reduce gas and fussiness. The nipple also moves with baby to provide a continuous latch to help reduce symptoms of colic.

One of the most interesting products featured in the Gift Bags was the Kiinde Twist Feeding System. This would have been awesome to have when I was pumping at work. This feeding system lets you pump directly from ANY pump into breastmilk storage pouches. You can store, warm and feed the milk directly from the pouch, without having to transfer the milk to a bottle.

In the Exhibit Hall, there were a lot of great baby products. Some I've seen before and others were new to me. One product that I hadn't seen before was the line of odor removing products from Fresh Wave.

Their products are all natural and remove odors without using harsh chemicals or toxic ingredients. Fresh Wave is available as a spray, gel or odor-removing packs and are available exclusively at Target. The products smell awesome and I've already put the gel in our bathroom and I had my husband use one of the packs in his gym bag.

If you've never attended MommyCon and are pregnant or have young kids at home, I would definitely recommend checking out the natural parenting convention. They are currently sold out for the rest of their 2015 dates, but check Mommy-Con.com as they announce their 2016 dates.

MommyCon DC 2015 Recap - 8/22 #MommyConDC

Thursday, August 27, 2015

DISCLOSURE: I received free admission to MommyCon in exchange for posting this review. All opinions are my own.

Ever since my youngest was born, I had been wanting to go to one of the baby events that I had been hearing about online. I thought they would be a great way to find out about and try new things for me and baby. But, something always came up. Either, I was scheduled to work or there was something else going on at the same time that I had to do.  So, I was super excited when I found out I was going to get a chance to attend MommyCon!

What is MommyCon? It's a natural parenting convention that features seminars and workshops on topics like breastfeeding, cloth diapering and car seat safety. There are events held in several major cities around the country. I had the chance to attend the one in DC. It was held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Northwest Washington, this past weekend.

Aveeno Baby Natural Protection Face Stick Sunscreen Review

Monday, July 27, 2015

DISCLOSURE: I received a free sample of Aveeno Baby Natural Protection Face Stick from Crowdtap to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

My kids love being outside. They love going to the pool, to the beach and just playing with their bikes and scooters. With them spending so much time outside, I make sure they're protected from the sun. Luckily, they've inherited my skin and tan before they burn. But, I still like to use at least SPF 30 sunscreen on them before they go outside.

I recently had the chance to try out Aveeno Baby Natural Protection Face Stick Sunscreen. Usually, I use a generic store brand face stick or lotion sunscreen on my kids' faces. On myself, I just use a facial moisturizer than has SPF protection built in.

Aveeno Baby Natural Protection Face Stick contains 100% naturally sourced sunscreen ingredients and is SPF 50. It's formulated with ACTIVE NATURALS Colloidal Oatmeal and mineral ingredients (Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide) to help provide a protective barrier on top of the skin for superior sun protection. It can be used on sensitive skin, oil-free, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, sweat and water resistant for 80 minutes.

Seventh Generation Healthy Baby Home Party 2015 #fighttoxins

Monday, June 1, 2015

DISCLOSURE: As a member of the Generation Good Community, I received free products in order to throw a Healthy Baby Home Party. All opinions are my own.

Seventh Generation has been working with Healthy Child Healthy World since 2009 to give parents a way to educate friends and family on how to create a healthy environment for their children through their Healthy Baby Home Parties. In addition to learning how to have a healthy home, guests are asked to join Seventh Generation in signing a petition to ask legislators in Albany, NY to pass the Child Safe Products Act. This will help get toxins out of our kids' hands.

Did You Know?
Loopholes in the laws that are supposed to protect us and our children allow over 4500 products in stores that put New York’s children at risk for a wide range of medical conditions, including cancer, behavioral problems and learning disabilities. No parent would feed their child arsenic or lead, but toys and pacifiers can contain arsenic, lead, cadmium and cobalt. These compounds can cause kidney damage, bone fragility and lung cancer. All of these toxic chemicals (and more) are available in the kids’ aisles across New York at stores in your neighborhood. - fighttoxins.com

Leaving the baby stage

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

The other day, I was doing dishes and my youngest came into the kitchen. She asked me to carry her. So, I stopped loading the dishwasher and picked her up. As I held her, it dawned on me that my little baby was going to be turning 2 in just a few weeks! Where had the time gone? It didn't seem that long ago that I could hold her in just one arm. Soon, she'll be too big and heavy to carry around in both arms. In time, she won't even ask me to pick her up anymore.

Braun No Touch + Forehead Thermometer Review

Thursday, December 18, 2014

DISCLOSURE:  I received a free product from Klout to facilitate this review.  All opinions are my own.

It's the season for colds and the flu.  Each of my kids have already been sick at least once since school started at the end of August.  That means coughs, sneezing, runny noses and fevers.  Sometimes, it can be a struggle to get a temperature reading on my kids -- especially, the baby.  We have been using an external thermometer that you swipe on the child's forehead.  Sometimes she cooperates.  Other times she fights me.  But, if you don't do it correctly, then you don't get an accurate reading.

So, I was pretty excited to try out the Braun No Touch + Forehead Thermometer!  It would be great to not even have to touch my daughter's forehead and still get a good reading!  I could even do it when she's asleep without fear of waking her up!

What's In The Box?

  • The Braun No Touch + Forehead Thermometer
  • Protective Cap
  • 2 AA batteries
