Sleep Number SleepIQ Technology Review

Monday, December 15, 2014

DISCLOSURE:  I received a free Sleep Number CoolFit Comfort Pillow from Smiley360 in exchange for visiting the Sleep Number store and reviewing the SleepIQ technology. All opinions are my own.

I don't sleep very well at night.  My mattress is over 10 years old and my kids are constantly jumping on it.  It's just not as comfortable as it used to be.  Plus, I cosleep with my 19-month-old and she still wakes up to nurse at night.

So, when I was offered the chance to try out the new Sleep Number beds, I jumped at the opportunity.   I've passed by the Sleep Number store numerous times, but have only been in once. A few years ago, I tried out one of the beds to see what my Sleep Number was.  My husband and I were given a remote that we could use to increase or decrease the firmness of the bed to see what we found to be most comfortable.  For me, a 35 felt great. My husband preferred something more firm.  I believe his was in the 70's!

The newest Sleep Number beds now offer SleepIQ technology.  Sensors inside the Sleep Number bed measure your average breathing rate, average heart rate and movement to track how you're sleeping.  You can then use this information to make adjustments to your Sleep Number setting.  With the SleepIQ journal feature, you can track custom details, such as caffeine intake and exercise and see how it affects your sleep. There's nothing to wear, nothing to turn on.  All you have to do is sleep.

I was pretty excited to try out the newest beds. My Aunt had recently bought a Sleep Number and was raving about it.

I first attempted to visit my local Sleep Number store on a weekday morning, a couple weeks before Thanksgiving.  The mall usually opens at 10 AM and so I figured I'd have plenty of time to check out the beds before having to go pick up my  son from preschool at 11.  My husband and I arrived at the mall around 10:15 or so.  But the gates were still up around the store.    So, we walked over Crazy 8 to look for some clothes for my daughter while we waited.  When we walked back, the Sleep Number store was open, but the sole Sleep Associate was busy with several people.  I didn't think we'd have enough to fully experience the bed before having to leave to pick up my son, so we decided to come back another day.

My local Sleep Number store
We ended up going back a few weeks later.  This time, the store was open.  The Sleep Associate was talking to another customer when my husband and I walked in, so we walked around and looked at the beds.  The Sleep Associate approached a couple minutes later and I  told her about Smiley360 and how I wanted to learn more about the SleepIQ technology.  We were to hand the Sleep Associate a card that talked about the mission and the first thing she commented on was the fact that I'd be receiving a "really nice" pillow. She showed it to us and remarked how she wished she could join, too!

She walked us over to one of the beds.  She laid down some paper on the pillows so my husband and I could lie down.  Unfortunately, we had the baby with us in the stroller and once my husband and I laid down on the bed, she started fussing and wanted out of the stroller so she could lie down with us,too.  So, my husband ended up leaving so he could walk her around the mall.

The Sleep Associate made some adjustments with the remote for the bed and I could feel the mattress contouring to my body.  It was super comfortable!  I probably could have fallen asleep there.  The Sleep Associate talked about how the Sleep Number bed differed from regular coil mattresses and how they have a 25 year warranty.  She didn't really go into much detail about the SleepIQ technology, though, at the end she did say that my Sleep Number was 35.  I'm not sure how she got that number, but it was the same number that I got when I tried to find my Sleep Number a few years back.

She then walked me over to a different bed.  This one had a pillowtop and an adjustable base.  This one was really nice, too.  Then, the phone rang and she concluded her little presentation on the beds.  I picked up a brochure about all the beds so I could read a little more about them at home.

I received my Sleep Number pillow sometime between my two visits to the Sleep Number store.  I received the CoolFit Foam Contour Pillow in Standard 5" size.  It was a lot bigger than I expected.  I was actually only expecting a travel size pillow, so this was a nice surprise.

Out of the box,  the pillow had a really strong scent.  There was even a note included with the pillow, indicating that it would have a new scent and would need to be aired out for a couple days and the cover laundered.  I elected not to wash the cover and the smell did dissipate after a few days.

The CoolFit Contour Pillow features a wave design that allows air to flow freely and offers support for any sleeping position.   The CoolFit foam with gel technology enhances memory foam for cool, comfortable sleep.  The memory foam cradles every curve, easing pressure points.

I liked how the pillow cradled my neck.  And it was true -- the pillow was cool when I laid down on it!  I've been using the pillow now for a couple weeks and haven't had any problems with it.
