Colgate Total Advanced Pro-Shield Mouthwash Review

Saturday, July 20, 2013

DISCLOSURE:  I received a free bottle of Colgate Total Mouthwash from Influenster.com to try and review.  All opinions are my own.

I don't use mouthwash regularly.  While, I do brush and try to floss regularly, I find that most mouthwashes burn too much for me to use everyday.  I'll use them from time to time, whenever I felt like my mouth and teeth could use some extra cleaning.  When I was asked to try and review the new Colgate Total Advanced Pro-Shield Mouthwash, I was excited!

Colgate Total Advanced Pro-Shield Mouthwash provides up to 12 hours of protection -- even after eating and drinking.  All without the burn of alcohol!  It kills 99% of germs, reduces plaque, helps prevent gingivitis and freshens your breath.  It's available in three flavors:
  • Peppermint Blast
  • Spearmint Surge
  • Wintermint Rush
I was sent a kit that included a 250 mL bottle of the Peppermint Blast flavor and a fact sheet on the product:

The directions state to rinse with 20 mL of mouthwash for 30 seconds twice a day.  This was rather surprising to me.  Other mouthwashes I've used instruct you to use only 10 mL, but to swish for a full minute.  With Colgate Total, you're using twice as much but swishing for half the time.  I also noticed that the mouthwash does not contain any fluoride.  The active ingredient is Cetylpyridinium chloride, which is supposed to fight gingivitis and plaque.

I brushed and flossed as I normally did and then went to try the new mouthwash.  I poured the mouthwash into a Dixie cup, though I had no idea how much 20 mL was supposed to be!  I've poured 10 mL of my kids' mouthwash (it comes with a way to squeeze exactly 10 mL out of the bottle) into a cup before and decided to try and estimate twice that.  I then swished for the 30 seconds.  There was absolutely no burn at all from the mouthwash.  In fact, if it weren't for the peppermint flavor, it would be like swishing with water!  I actually missed the burn a little bit.  To me, the burn meant the product was working.  The Colgate Total Mouthwash did leave my breath minty fresh.  But, I wouldn't say it stayed that way for 12 hours.

Here's my Colgate smile!

Would you recommend it?
If you're looking for a mouthwash that will freshen your breath and will not burn in your mouth, then this mouthwash is for you!  Just remember that it doesn't contain fluoride and is not an antiseptic rinse.

How much does it cost?  It's available in three sizes:  8.4 fl oz, 16.9 fl oz and 33.8 fl oz.  Prices range from about $3 - $6, depending on the size.

Where can I buy it?    Available at all major drug stores, mass merchandisers, grocery stores and online retailers.

  1. I use fluorodine and I find it very comfortable. This is a long lasting mouthwash with antibacterial formula.

  2. I always prefer to buy mouthwash online. Yes I can get them in drug stores, mass merchandisers and grocery stores but I get good deals online and it saves my money as well as time.
