Truvia Natural Sweetener Product Review

Thursday, March 22, 2012

DISCLOSURE:  I received a 7-count pack of Truvia sweetener as part of the Love VoxBox from Influenster.com to review and share.  All opinions are my own.

I am a pretty loyal user of Splenda.  It's the only sweetener I'll use in my coffee.  If I have to, I'll use real sugar or Sugar In The Raw, but my preferred sweetener is Splenda.  So I was pretty skeptical to try Truvia.  I'm not a fan of other sweeteners, like Sweet 'N Low or Equal, because of the after-taste it leaves in my mouth.  They also taste more artificial to me than Splenda does.

Truvia is a natural sweetener made from the best tasting part of the Stevia plant.  It contains zero calories.  Unlike other stevia-based sweeteners that may use a mixture of different parts of the Stevia plant, Truvia only uses stevia leaf extract.

So, last week I tried some in my cup of coffee.  In the evening, I usually have a cup of coffee and some sort of dessert as I unwind and relax for the night.  I brewed a cup of Green Mountain Breakfast Blend Decaf in my Keurig (love that thing!) and sprinkled a packet of the Truvia in.  I added my normal amount of half and half and stirred it up.  I sat down to eat it with a giant chocolate chip cookie that I had made earlier that evening.  It wasn't so bad at first.  It did taste different than my normal cup of coffee.  It seemed slightly sweeter but then came this after taste that I did not like.  My husband also took a sip and he absolutely HATED it!  He thought it was disgusting!  I ended up only drinking a couple sips of my coffee and throwing the rest down the drain.  =(

A few days later, I decided to try the Truvia again.  Maybe it was because I had decaf coffee, I told myself.  So that morning, I made a cup of Green Mountain Colombian Fair Trade Select coffee in the Keurig.  I made mine with a packet of Truvia and I made my husband's with Splenda.  I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison.  I used about equal amounts of Horizon Organic Half and Half in each of our cups of coffee.  We had it with our breakfast of scrambled eggs and sausage patties!

I took a sip of my husband's coffee first, so I could get a good feel of what my normal cup of coffee tastes like.  Then I started drinking my coffee.  Again, it was different.  It's hard to describe.  But it just didn't taste as good!  As you can see in the picture on the left, that's what I had left over from my cup.  I ended up tossing that cup of coffee too and making a fresh cup with Splenda.  I just don't think I like any sweeteners that use any part of the Stevia plant!

Would you recommend it?  No.  I didn't care for the taste at all.  Maybe if you've tried other stevia-based sweeteners and liked them, then this might be okay for you too.  But I can't honestly recommend it to anyone!

How much does it cost?  A 40 count package retails for about $3.99.

Where can I buy it?  You can find it at all major drug stores, mass merchandisers, grocery stores and online retailers.
