Seventh Generation Natural Care Products Review

Sunday, June 2, 2013

DISCLOSURE:  I received samples of Seventh Generation products from Smiley360 to try and review.  All opinions are my own.

As a whole, our family has been moving towards eating more organic and natural foods and using more natural products.  One area that we haven't made a total switch yet is with personal care products.  They tend to be expensive and sometimes not as effective as their chemical-laden counterparts.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to try out several products in the Seventh Generation line.  They included personal care and baby care items.  I was sent a kit that included samples of:
  • Seventh Generation for the Wee Generation Baby Shampoo & Wash, Light, Fresh Scent
  • Seventh Generation for the Wee Generation Baby Lotion, Light, Fresh Scent
  • Seventh Generation Baby Natural 4x Laundry Detergent
  • Seventh Generation Lavender Moisturizing Lotion
  • Seventh Generation Mandarin Nourishing Body Wash
  • Seventh Generation Mandarin Refreshing Facial Cleansing Cloths

I received these products when I was at the end of my last pregnancy and thought it was perfect timing!  I could use the baby products when baby arrived and I could pack away the personal care products in my hospital bag!

Seventh Generation for the Wee Generation Baby Lotion
This gentle baby lotion is made with extra virgin olive oil and contains no parabens, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances.  It's hypoallergenic and is USDA certified to be 95% Biobased.

The lotion is very light and absorbs pretty quickly.  There is a slight scent, but nothing too strong.  My baby daughter's skin has been very dry and I've applied this to her.  It moisturizes, but I did find that I had to reapply it throughout the day to keep her skin from flaking.  It's a nice lotion, but I may have to use something different for my daughter.  A 6-oz bottle retails for $7.99 and can be purchased online through Seventh Generation's website, as well as Amazon.com and Walgreens.com.  To find a local retailer, use Seventh Generation's Store Locator.

Seventh Generation for the Wee Generation Baby Shampoo & Wash
It's great when products have dual uses.  This gentle wash can be used to wash both baby's body and hair.  It has a tear-free formula that's infused with extra virgin olive oil.  It rinses clean, leaving your baby's skin moisturized.  The baby wash is non-toxic and has a light, fresh scent.  It's USDA certified to be 97% Biobased.

Since my baby is only a week old and still has her cord stump, I used the body wash on my 2 year old.  It cleaned well and had a nice scent.  It lathers well and wasn't drying.  A 10-oz bottle retails for $7.99 and be purchased online through Seventh Generation's website, as well as Amazon.com and Walgreens.com.  To find a local retailer, use Seventh Generation's Store Locator.

Seventh Generation Baby Natural 4x Laundry Detergent
With a new baby in the house, I like to wash her clothing and any other items that touch baby's skin in a milder detergent than what we normally use.  In the past we've used Dreft with our other children, but will likely switch to this because it's natural. This detergent is USDA certified to be 95% Biobased.  It has a premium stain fighting formula and has be used to clean all of baby's messes and even cloth diapers.  It leaves no residue on fabrics.

We used our sample on a load of the entire family's clothes.  The detergent did a good job at cleaning the clothes, granted, there really wasn't anything really dirty in the load.  It had a scent, but wasn't overly powerful.  I think we would continue to use this detergent mainly for the baby's clothes and blankets, but use our regular detergent for the rest of the family.  The detergent is available in a 32-oz and 40-oz bottle.  Price information was not readily available, but you can purchase the detergent online at retailers like Amazon.com and Soap.com.  You can also use Seventh Generation's Store Locator to find a store near you.

Seventh Generation Lavender Moisturizing Lotion
This lotion is 95% plant-based and contains no parabens or phthalates.  It's fragranced with natural oils and botanical extracts. It has a moisturizing formula that won't clog pores.

When I first opened the sample and smelled it, I swear it smelled just like an Aveda store or spa.  But once applied to the skin, the scent quickly dissipates.  The lotion was light and absorbed quickly into the skin.  It leaves your skin feeling moisturized, without the need to reapply later in the day.  It's available in an 8-oz bottle and retails for $7.99.  You can purchase it online on Seventh Generation's website, as well as Amazon.com and Walgreens.com.

Seventh Generation Mandarin Nourishing Body Wash
This body wash is 93% plant-based and contains no parabens or phthalates.  It's scented with essential oils and botanical extracts.  The body wash is pretty light, but lathers up nicely with a mesh sponge.  You don't need to put a lot on your sponge.  It has a mild scent.  It isn't what I normally think of when I think of citrus scents, but it's still nice -- not too strong.  It wasn't drying and coupled with the moisturizing lotion, it left my skin feeling soft and moisturized.  It comes in an 15-oz bottle and retails for $7.99.  You can purchase it through Seventh Generation's website, as well as Amazon.com and Walgreens.com.

Seventh Generation Mandarin Refreshing Facial Cleansing Cloths
These facial cloths are infused with 100% plant-based cleansers and contain no parabens or  phthalates.  It removes dirt, oil and makeup and its fragrance is naturally sourced.  It's also available in a soothing lavender scent.

I used the cloth the night of my C-section.  I was on a catheter and couldn't get out of bed.  The cloth was very wet but was actually refreshing to clean my face with.  I felt it did a good job at removing any of the makeup that I might have had left on my face and it didn't leave a film on my face.  It did, however, leave a weird after-scent.  It smelled nice out of the package and as I was cleaning my face, but after it dried, I didn't really care for how my face smelled.  Granted, I was going to bed soon, so it didn't really matter.  The facial wipes are available in a 30-count pack and retails for $5.99.  You can buy it straight from Seventh Generation's website, or from online retailers like Amazon.com and Walgreens.com.  To find a retailer near you, use Seventh Generation's Store Locator
