Lately, I've been paying more attention to what I eat. My metabolism isn't what it used to be and I can't eat the way I did 15 years ago. In addition to being more mindful of the foods I'm eating, I've begun looking into nutritional supplements to help me look and feel better.
One type of supplement that I had been considering are probiotics. I had begun noticing that my stomach would get upset after eating. I couldn't really pinpoint what it was that was making it upset. It just seemed like everything I ate was making me feel sick. I already have a ton of food allergies and so I was afraid that maybe I was developing a gluten sensitivity, too.
I had read that probiotics could aid with digestion. I thought it couldn't hurt to give them a try before needlessly eliminating my favorite foods from my diet.
I had a chance to try Women's Probiotic 20 Billion from NOW Foods. I liked that this probiotic was formulated specifically for women. It features three probiotic strains that help to support women's health through every stage of life.*
- L. rhamnosus HN001 and L. acidophilus La-14 have been shown to colonize the vaginal tract and help to maintain a healthy vaginal pH when taken orally*
- Both B. lactis HN019 and HN001 strains could help to support a healthy immune system in pregnant and nursing women*
- B. lactis HN019 also supports GI regularity and reduces occasional gas and bloating*
The recommended dosage is to take 1 capsule a day. I found the capsules easy to swallow. I usually took them in the morning with breakfast -- when I remembered. It's recommended to refrigerate the product after opening, so sometimes I'd forget to take it. I probably was able to take the probiotic about 5 days a week. I didn't notice any adverse side effects. My stomach never got upset from it and I didn't develop any gas or bloating.
Even with my somewhat inconsistent use, I did find that my digestive issues ceased. It may just be coincidence, but I like to think that the probiotics helped. I've been able to eat more normally again. I'm planning to continue taking the probiotic.
