Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight Review

DISCLOSURE:  I received a free product from SheSpeaks to facilitate this review.  All opinions are my own.

I have thick and somewhat wavy and frizzy hair.  I just can't wash it and let it air dry.  It would turn into a big frizz ball!  I have to blow dry it straight and then use a flat iron to make it look nice.  I do this pretty much every day.  It takes forever.  I usually have to wake up at least 2-3 hours before I need to leave to go somewhere so that I have enough time to shower and do my hair!

Recently, I had the opportunity to try Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight.  It's a lightweight styling creme that progressively loosens curls with every use.  As you straighten your hair, Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight’s naturally derived plant fibers invisibly attach to hair to loosen curl and help lock in straightness. The formula’s humidity barrier of organic cassava extract and maize defends against frizz. The more you use it, the easier it is to create straight, smooth styles, so you can spend less time with a blow dryer and flat iron every day.  Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight is the newest addition the Smooth Infusion line from Aveda.

To use, apply a small coin sized amount to towel-dried, still-damp hair.  Use more or less depending on your hair's length and thickness.  Apply it one section at a time, starting mid-shaft and working it through to the ends.  If hair is thick or coarse, apply it to the roots as well.  Blow dry straight and follow with a flat iron, if desired.  After 5 consecutive applications of Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight, hair will stay straight for up to 3 washes.

Since my hair is pretty thick, I used about a quarter sized amount on each side of my head.

Next, I sectioned off my hair and blow dried it using a boar-bristle round brush and paddle brush.  I found my hair to be a lot frizzier or puffier after I blow dried using the Naturally Straight.  Here's how it looked on the first day of using it.

Puffy hair after blow drying.  Sleeker hair after using a flat iron.
I felt I HAD to use a flat iron or my hair just wouldn't look straight enough.

I've been using the Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight for about a week now.  I can't say it has made it any faster to style my hair.  I'm still spending at least half an hour blow drying my hair and about another 10 minutes flat ironing it.  Maybe it's a little straighter to begin with after washing, but I can't be totally be sure about that.

It does smell nice and it's nice and light.  I did find it hard to gauge just how much to use for my hair. If I didn't use enough, my hair was still pretty frizzy and big, even after trying to flat iron it.  If I used too much, then my hair felt greasy after styling.  I also felt my hair could be straighter and smoother after styling.  But, that just may be because I need a new flat iron.

After using Aveda Naturally Straight for about a week.
Would you recommend it?
It has its pluses and minuses.  I'm going to continue using it until it runs out.  But, I may not go out and buy more right away.  I'm thinking I might get better results if I pair it with the Aveda Smooth Infusion shampoo and conditioner and buy myself a better flat iron.

How much does it cost?
A 5 oz (150 mL) bottle retails for $26.

Where can I buy it?
It's available at Aveda salons, spas and stores and online at aveda.com

  2. I love it!!

I too have frizzy curly hair naturally, but it doesn't do well with the blow dryer at all so I need to pull it back into a low pony tail to let it dry that way. After that I can flat iron it straight.

I was curious about this product and seems like it works great!

  3. I used to use this product consistently when I lived in New York and it makes my hair considerably less frizzy after blow drying!

  5. My hair has minimal frizz, but since it's long, it looks awful with even the tiniest bit. This may be just what I need since most of the time I skip styling my hair because I don't have all of the time to do so.
